Agave flowers

Agave flower

It almost seems like a popular legend, but it is not. The Agave, a very popular plant widespread in the Mediterranean areas and belonging to the agavaceae family, produces in its entire life a single flower, after which it will die. It is a very strange thing because the plant can also be 30 years old and always grows very luxuriant and never produces any flower other than what is sadly referred to, flower of death because just after its flowering, the plant begins to lose its beauty and vigor and then inexorably dies. Fortunately, between the birth and complete flowering of the Agave flower, it takes a long time before the flower fully ripens. It seems, perhaps it is, a very sad story. The plant uses all its energies to bring the flower into the world and then dies while its creature grows strong and luxuriant. In fact it is so, the Agave flower takes months to become large after its birth but when it reaches full maturity, it gives the mother this sad fate.
It is a beauty that cannot be explained in words. It is a very long wait, which seems to never end, yet at the birth of this plant creature, all the time waited and all the sufferings of the plant, seem to no longer count because the spectacular beauty of this flower, is an unrepeatable event that the botanists are fascinated by its fabulous scenery.

At the base of the agave there are shoots and they are those that are implanted. Cut them with a sharp knife and let them dry for three days and then plant them in a soil mixed with sand. As soon as the shoots take root in the ground, the seedlings can be repotted in an accommodation more comfortable for them and then change pots every two years. Pruning is done only on dried leaves and is done by cutting the leaves at the base with a knife. The knife should be flamed and sterilized to avoid unnecessary infection to the plant ... The Agave resists all parasites except for the attack of the brown cochineal. To eliminate it, gently pass on its leaves, a wad of cotton wool soaked in denatured alcohol and then with a spray filled with simple water, the plant is irrigated to rinse it to perfection. In Spring, a high-spectrum fungicide is applied to the plant in order to protect it throughout the summer.
